Integrated communications company, on Tuesday launched a vigorous subscriber registration exercise countrywide. The exercise that kicks of tomorrow (14th February) targets customers who are yet to register their voice or data SIM cards. By dialing *232#, customers will now be able to confirm their registration details at no charge.
Safaricom has taken the lead in the registration drive in anticipation of changes in the Kenya Information Act. This follows proposed legislative amendment to the Kenya Information and Communications Act to introduce provisions empowering the Minister for Information and Communications to make regulations for the registration of subscribers to telecommunication services.
Customers already registered can confirm their registration details by also dialing *232#.
This follows a similar SIM card registration campaign initiated by the Government in June 21, 2010 and applied to customers buying SIM cards for the first time as well as those acquiring additional lines.
This follows the Government’s directive to mobile operators through the Communications Commssion of Kenya (CCK) to ensure that all their subscribers’ identity information is registered pursuant to a directive by H. E the President in June 2010.
Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore has made a special appeal to subscribers saying, “I would like to especially appeal to our voice and data customers who have PrePay modems, iPhones, iPads and Tablets to register their lines during this campaign to avoid future disconnection.”
Mr Collymore went on to highlight the measures that the company has taken to ease the registration process, ”We have now made it easier for our customers to register by having additional agents stationed within strategic locations countrywide. This is in addition to our Safaricom Shops, Dealer and M-PESA outlets who are all authorised to register customers.
To register their SIM cards, subscribers are required to give their full names, identity document number, physical / postal address, gender, date of birth and alternative contacts .Customers are also required to present their their original identity cards or other official personal identification documentation including Passports and Military IDs.
In this new campaign, M-PESA customers will not be required to re-register. They will however be required provide additional details such as Physical address, and Alternative contact.
